Illustration is all about making pictures and putting them to work. Looking pretty can’t be its only function. It has to communicate. Can an illustration make you angry? Afraid? Giddy-happy? You bet. It’s all about deciding what you want your illustration to do, then choosing what techniques can make that happen best, and finally making those techniques visually compelling. Hmmm—that sounds a lot like good communication.
